New York City 2022 - Sunday/in/Brooklyn/Midtown

We finally got some shut eye laying flat for a few hours. We had a 9:45 am reservation at SUNDAY/in/BROOKLYN. After the brunch, we hope to explore Midtown and maybe catch a show.

Looking southwest from our room at 6: 45 am. The Red Hook Marine Terminal can be seen in the distance

We had made a reservation at SUNDAY/in/BROOKLYN well before we departed for NYC. We were quite intrigued by the thick maple praline hazelnut pancake and its brunch cocktails. It was a great place for us to have a fun meal, people watch, and attempt to blend in with the hipster crowd at Williamsburg. To save time and energy again, we took a short Uber ride which dropped us off right in from of our destination.

After taking a slower start of our day to enjoy the brunch, we took the L line from Bedford Av with a transit to the A,C,E line uptown to 50 St.

We got off the theater district with a mindset of scoring cheaper tickets for long running shows such as Chicago or Phantom of the Opera. Last minute we decided to check out the new show The Music Man starring Hugh Jackman at the Winter Garden Theater. It turned out that there were some very good seats with reasonable price ($299 would be considered reasonable since when we called the ticket price was over $1000). We booked these tickets on the spot.

We had a bit of time to spare before the 3:00 pm showing. We walked east on 50 St towards Radio City Music Hall, then a right on Sixth Ave, then a left on 49 St to Rockefeller Center. We reminisced on our time here back 2017. Finally, we ended up at Saks Fifth Ave just a block east as our pit stop (super clean restroom) before walking back for our 3:00 showing.

We made it back to the Winter Garden Theater quarter before 3:00 pm. We felt a sense of excitement to share this experience with a theater full of people. We hadn't felt this say since 2019.
We had no expectation of the show. But the story, the singing, the dancing, and the costumes exceeded our expectations. At the end of the show, there was a fund raiser. Cast signed items were being auctioned off and the crowd got into it.

After the final curtain dropped, we rushed to the back of the theater to catch a glimpse of the Hugh Jackson and rest of the cast leaving the theater. The crowd cheered when a cast member emerged from the exit. Hugh came out at the end and he slowly worked this way around the crowd. GG and MM got a nice selfie with Hugh. Despite the somewhat high cost of the ticket price, we thought the entire experience was well worth it.

After Hugh got into his black SUV, the crowd quickly dispersed. We rushed to the subway to make our 6:15 pm Edge observation deck reservation at 30 Hudson Yards.

Situated at 1,100' above sea level, the 100th floor observation deck at the super skyscraper 30 Hudson Yards in the Chelsea neighborhood is the highest outdoor sky deck in Western Hemisphere. The purple 7 line got us here quickly. The 30 Hudson Yards building is a luxury shopping mall/office building. We rushed pass DIOR and Tiffany on the first floor and took the elevator to the 4th floor observation deck check in. After scanning our tickets on the phone, we snaked through the security line to get to the elevator. There were all kinds of interesting displays and a hallway with a cool light show before the elevator. It took the elevator exactly 52 seconds to shoot us up to 1,100'. There was a very cool show inside the elevator. After exiting the elevator, we were treated with the the panoramic skyline of New York City.

We waited in line to take a picture at "The Edge". The wind chill felt pretty cold as the sun was going down. We could see lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, Jersey, and uptown for miles.

After spending about an hour at 1,100', we had truly worked up an appetite. We rode the elevator down and there was a Shake Shack right at the exit. We ordered basically everything on the menu, and consumed everything we ordered.

After the needed grub, we were hoping to walk the High Line a bit to work off the shake and fries. We had failed to locate the entrance to the High Line (it turned out that we simply walked the wrong direction). So the High Line was not meant to be this evening (we ended up completing the High Line on Tuesday).

However, we were not entirely defeated by the cold weather of New York City spring time. Since the Chelsea Market would not close until 10 pm on Sunday, we decided to head to Chelsea Market in the Meat Packing district.

We were only partially correct about the 10 pm closing time. Even though the market was still open when we got there quarter pass 9 pm, all the stores had closed. We strolled through the empty market and ended up at the Starbucks Reserve Roastery across the street. We ordered couple of items to extend the evening and people watched sitting at the stools by the window. It was well past 10:00 pm that we took the red 2,3 line downtown back to our hotel in Brooklyn to call it a night.
