A Key West Experience (through a teenager's eyes)

The salty smell of the ocean filled my nose as I laid on a beach as peaceful as can be. My family spent the entire day before winter break at our cousin’s house for a festive Christmas gathering. Even as I sat on the couch, I was still wondering about where my family was taking me for this two week long vacation, they still hadn’t told me. Supposedly, it’s a surprise. I had a couple hunches, the main one being somewhere in Florida, but I wasn’t one-hundred percent sure. I got a good two hours of sleep that night and woke up at two in the morning to leave for the airport. Once we arrived at the Ontario airport I took a quick peek at my boarding pass and where our plane was headed. Dallas, Texas. The land of barbecue and cowboys. Actually that might not be true, I’ve never been to Texas, but from what I’ve heard, that seems pretty accurate. Our flight there was about three hours and soon we were heading off…

To our next gate. Yep, that’s right, Texas was our layover state. Luckily this next flight was the last one. The initials to the upcoming airport were EYW. I had no idea where that was. Then, I saw the city name, Key West. I knew I had heard about that place before and I was right! Key West, Florida was the location of our amazing vacation. Also known as the Conch Republic, Key West was a place I’d never forget.

I did so many things that I never thought I would be doing. Parasailing was just one of them. The wind blowing into my face as I flew three-hundred feet above the ocean floor? Exhilarating. The cold ocean water splashing into my face as I snorkeled? Unforgettable. The delicious smoothie going down my mouth as I laid on the beach? Exquisite.

And that was just a little peek into my time at Key West. Beautiful sunsets everyday, walking along the coast, and eating food were some of my favorite things to do.

I must mention that the food in Key West was absolutely amazing. There were so many different cuisines to choose from. One day we were eating Cuban food and the next day we were eating fish and chips. One of the best fish and chips I’ve ever eaten was at Key West on the patio of a restaurant called Keys Fishery right along the ocean.

I devoured the best bread I’ve ever had at a fancy outdoor restaurant called Blackfin. So the next time you’re looking for winter break vacation spots, consider warm and sunny Key West, Florida.
